A legendary astronomer, cosmologist, astrophysicist, science educator, author, and surely one of the most inspirational persons to have ever lived.

It's been nearly 17 years since the world lost Carl. If he were alive today he would be 79. Carl achieved more than most in his life, but in my opinion, the most important was making science intelligible for everyone and bringing the wonders of the universe into our homes. Carl approached the world with wonder, scepticism and awe equally, teaching us all that we're living in a universe that is far more beautiful, different and awesome than our wildest imaginations.

We make our world significant by the courage of our questions and the depth of our answers.Carl Sagan

Being the true sceptic he was, Carl articulated more elegantly than anyone the true nature of reality, and how awe inspiring and mind blowing it really is without having to resort to the supernatural.

"It is far better to grasp the Universe as it really is than to persist in delusion, however satisfying and reassuring" – Carl Sagan

You sir, are sorely missed. Happy Birthday!

I'll leave you with this amazing short clip with Carl's voice over from 'A Pale Blue Dot'. (Thanks Reid Gower).
